Last night I did it! I had my first on stage performance here in Montreal! Accompanied by my friend Carlos on his melodica, I played my baritone ukulele and sang a beautiful, romantic song called “J’ai Soif”, written by a Quebecois chanteuse qui s’appelle Caracol. If you go to the link and scroll down on the right hand side under her “Blanc Mercredi” album, you can LISTEN to J’ai Soif The show was put together by Le Commission Scholaire de Montreal – basically the adult education school board – as a showcase of student talent – one performance by a group of students from each school.
I wish I had a picture of Carlos and I on stage, or a video, but fear not! Apparently the organizers had a DVD of the show recorded last night, so I will be able to post a video eventually. I just hope they recorded the 7:30 show instead of the 5:00 show!! I was so nervous for the 5 o’clock performance that I messed up a large part of the song – a whole verse – and poor Carlos had to keep playing and figure out what the heck I was doing! But I pulled it back together and just kept smiling. It was noticeable, but Carlos kept telling me not to worry about it, the point of the show was to have fun, which we did. Carlos and I (and his dog Sawyer of course!) went to have a beer before the 7:30 show and that loosened me up a bit. I managed to sing IN FRENCH in front of about 400 people, and despite severe butterflies, got through the song, and sang and played well. We had many people coming up to us afterwards congratulating us and complimenting us. I can hardly believe that after only 3 months here in Montreal I’ve already played in front of a bigger crowd than I ever performed in front of during my three years in London! The funny or SYNCHRONISTIC thing, is that just before moving here I had thought to myself several times that I’d like to learn or write a song in French in order to practice and improve my songwriting, playing and, well, French, of course! So I got my wish, but not in a way I’d expected! Our thoughts are very very powerful!
